Water shortage in Palermo leads to ban on using drinking water for watering plants

The mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla, has signed an ordinance in which “the population residing in the municipal territory is forbidden until the end of December 31st, or until further notice of emergency cessation, to use drinking water to water balcony and garden plants from 5 am to 11 pm and to wash private vehicles, excluding car washes.” The ordinance is related to the severe water crisis in Sicily. Municipal police officers will have to enforce the ordinance, and a fine of 25 to 500 euros is provided for those who violate the bans. For the same period of time, and during the same time frame, it is forbidden to “wash courtyards and squares and to feed ornamental fountains, tanks, and pools, unless equipped with devices for artificial water recycling.” The provision excludes “the use of drinking water for business activities that require the use of drinking water, within the limits of what is authorized.”
