Violence against women: 40 cases at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania this year

Until mid-November 2023, there were 40 cases of violence recorded at the emergency room of Cannizzaro hospital in Catania. This is a decrease from 54 cases in 2021 and 71 the following year. The numbers were disclosed by the medical manager in charge of anti-violence at the emergency room, Claudia Vecchio, during a day of awareness against gender-based violence. This event was organized by the hospital in collaboration with Fondazione Onda and the network Bollini Rosa. The event aimed to raise awareness among students, healthcare workers, and social workers, with a focus on younger audiences. The extraordinary commissioner Salvatore Giuffrida highlighted the importance of hospitals in supporting victims of violence, especially in light of the youth involved in femicides. This role requires coordination with other institutions, particularly schools, to address the current emergency in education and training.
