Valerio Verre, the prodigal son: “I can give so much to Palermo, it’s like the first time”

Valerio Verre is back wearing the Palermo shirt for the third time, this time on a permanent basis signing a three-year contract. The versatile midfielder, born in 1994, recently ended his relationship with Sampdoria, where he made 26 appearances last season in both the league and Coppa Italia, scoring a goal.

“I am very emotional, it is always nice to come back, it is the third time but it feels like the first time,” he said on the club’s official website. “I am very happy. I chose Palermo because when the director called me, knowing the environment and the people here, I know what to expect, and I can still find a lot. I also know that there has definitely been an improved atmosphere compared to two years ago, so I didn’t think twice about coming back.”

Verre’s return to Palermo is a sort of homecoming, as he was part of the team that was promoted to Serie A in 2014 under Iachini. He is familiar with the City Football Group’s philosophy and winning mentality, which he believes is crucial for players.

One of Verre’s strengths is his versatility, as he can play in various positions in midfield, from playmaker to attacking midfielder to box-to-box midfielder. He is eager to contribute wherever the coach needs him. The team has strengthened since his last spell, and Verre believes they are more competitive now. The fans were particularly excited about his return, remembering his stunning goal from midfield against Frosinone in February 2023.

Verre dedicated his last message to the Palermo fans, promising them his utmost commitment, unity, and a determination to win every game. He has chosen the number 26 shirt, while Gomes switched from 4 to 6 and Appuah will wear the number 19 shirt.
