Three men from Catania arrested for stealing copper from Enna railway line

The railway police in Catania have arrested three men from the city, aged between 30 and 60 years old, for the theft of 750 kilograms of copper from railway companies near the province of Enna. The police, along with colleagues from the Caltanissetta railway police, had been investigating a series of thefts of copper cables and other ferrous materials used by the railways on the Libertina-Sparagogna stretch of the Fiumetorto-Bicocca railway line, which is currently closed for track doubling.

During the investigation, which also involved surveillance camera footage from Fs Security, an alert was received by the Caltanissetta railway police last night, prompting the Catania police to intervene in the Libertinia area. They caught the suspects in a van on Provincial Road 192, where they had already loaded the stolen copper, valued at around 165,000 euros, back to the railways. The van also contained tools used to cut the cables and work clothes similar to those worn by Rfi technicians. The three men, who had previous criminal records, were arrested and taken to the Enna prison pending trial. The driver of the van will also face charges for driving without a license and disobeying authority, as he had failed to comply with a previous order issued by the Enna police chief on the recommendation of the Caltanissetta railway police.
