The Council of Europe: Italy changes its policies on migrants

The commissioner for human rights of the Council of Europe, Dunja Mijatovic, has called for a radical change in Italy’s migration policies, particularly regarding sea rescues, relations with NGOs, and agreements with countries in North Africa. Mijatovic criticized Italy for not doing enough in rescue operations and making it difficult for NGOs. She also criticized agreements with countries like Libya and Tunisia. She praised the humanity shown by the citizens of Lampedusa towards migrants, despite their own struggles and feeling abandoned. The majority of citizens continue to help those who arrive on the island by providing food and collecting clothes.
