The accidental hero: Casteldaccia’s Giuseppe dies helping co-workers

The colleague heard shouting because three of them were no longer showing signs of life after they descended to purify the sewer tank and rushed towards the hatch because at that moment he was on the surface. Giuseppe La Barbera, 26 years old, the youngest among the five victims of the Casteldaccia massacre, died to help the other four. He was the only one not on the payroll of the Quadrifoglio company from Partinico, which worked on the sewer network after winning the contract of Amap, the former municipal company of Palermo. Amap had enlisted La Barbera as a temporary worker through an agency. “Not having completed direct hires, we turn to agencies in case of necessity,” says Alessandro Di Martino, sole administrator of Amap. Giuseppe La Barbera was from the Albergheria neighborhood where the popular Ballarò market is located. Giuseppe got married in May 2019 and in a few days would have celebrated 5 years of marriage. He leaves behind his young wife and two young children.
