Students in Palermo dance and sing to say “no” to violence against women and femicide.
The song against femicide in South America resonates in the historic center of Palermo, sung by over a hundred girls and boys from the Francesco Ferrara high school and the Silvio Boccone comprehensive institute. With guitars, darbouka, percussion, and cajón, they sang and danced in rebellion, performing the Chilean song “The Rapist Is You.” This false mob has been organized for years, says teacher Claudia Galati, explaining that the students want to speak out against oppression and femicide. The school’s headteacher, Ilaria Virciglio, emphasizes the importance of schools taking on the responsibility of sensitizing the younger generations. The students have adopted a square in the city and were cleaning it up, and now they have returned to color a bench red in honor of the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The president of the Retake association, Marco D’Amico, and the vice president of the First District, Antonio Nicolao, express their support for the initiative and the importance of sending strong messages through these actions.
