Stromboli invaded by mud, emergency commissioner appointed for flooding. Residents: we are scared
Regional state of emergency declared. Very first resources on the way for the removal of flood debris. Commissioner Duilio Alongi, a regional official, appointed. Some interventions also in Stromboli and Ginostra. “Now it is also necessary to plan long-term interventions,” explain the residents.
In Stromboli and the village of Ginostra, after the disaster with the downpour, there have also been initial inspections by the carabinieri and technicians, but with the new rain in the inhabited area, boulders continue to arrive.
Islanders, vacationers, and increasingly alarmed German tourists. With the patrol boat came Captain Alberto Del Basso for the first checks in Ginostra with mud still on the terraces and also in homes and shops. And he will report to the relevant authorities, starting with the prefecture.
Trails torn apart, as well as in Stromboli where a technician from the Civil Protection Alessandro Faralla arrived, who will report to the Gullo committee, which in turn has requested a state of emergency from the national government and urgent interventions from the Civil Protection to secure the island, given that the winter season is approaching which could compromise the livability of the island.
The Schifani government has already approved the first interventions: in Stromboli, interventions will be carried out to remove debris that hinders circulation along certain arteries, compromising normal mobility; in particular, in the fraction of Ginostra, the alluvial residues that make several streets in the town center impassable will be removed, with the aim of restoring access to the area and ensuring the safety of the inhabitants.
But the islanders are becoming increasingly worried. Mrs. Rosaria Cincotta comments, “even on Monday morning hit by another rain. The first question I asked myself arriving near Zaza’s house is Domenico’s – she recounts – was, this time too it went well. Another devastation of the territory and our morale. We are only seeing volunteers and local companies working, but struggling to do as quickly as possible to clear the torrents and roads of the large boulders coming down from the mountain. And – she continues – in seeing what came down (giant rocks), I thank San Vincenzo and San Bartolo that no one was hurt. The fact that so many of us mobilized to bring help is a clear demonstration that “the community,” a subject that is often declared dying, is on the contrary very much alive, capable of organization and lots of humanity. It’s been two years that we volunteers have been replacing the State. Every passing day increases distrust and anger. The erosion of the mountain does not wait, what will happen this winter? ”
The president of the Ginostra committee Gianluca Giuffrè also addressed the Minister of Civil Protection Nello Musumeci: “Following a short but intense rain – he reports – debris and volcanic sand came down from the mountain, causing the overflowing of all the streams in Ginostra. The waters, mud, and debris invaded the roads and homes. This event, destined to be repeated in the coming days, caused considerable damage to public and private structures. This occurred due to a series of concatenated events including neglect and lack of maintenance, over the years, of the drainage streams. Fortunately, there were no deaths or injuries, although temporary evacuation of some residents was necessary. ”
The damages: all the main roads of the village have been invaded by muddy material and rocks, making them impassable. Electrical, water, and telephone cables were cut (currently the electrical network has been temporarily and precariously reactivated). The Pertuso haulage dock has been sanded. Some roads have literally disappeared. The cliff of the Pertuso dock has been further damaged and the containment network is about to collapse. Numerous homes and businesses have suffered damage. Private gardens and boats have been destroyed by the impetuous fury of the mud.
