Silence surrounds Betta’s confirmation as superintendent of Teatro Massimo in Palermo

The issue of Marco Betta’s reappointment as superintendent of the Teatro Massimo Foundation in Palermo seemed almost closed after his meeting with the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, but “several weeks have passed and there is silence on the matter that is worrying,” notes Fabio Giambrone, a city councilor in Palermo for the Green and Left Alliance. “The minister had summoned him, so this seemed to be a good sign,” says Giambrone, “but now the situation does not leave much hope.”

Meanwhile, there are internal resistances at the theater to the reconfirmation of the outgoing superintendent, from some executives and unionists, as well as political dynamics. “What worries, however, is a certain lack of freedom of choice on the part of Mayor Roberto Lagalla,” continues Giambrone. “The fact that even around the members of the Board of Directors there have been strategic discussions by certain political factions, makes the mayor seem influenced by political forces. All of this results in a certain weakness in which Lagalla currently finds himself.”
