Serious illness for Joe Barone, Atalanta-Fiorentina postponed: Viola remembers Astori tragedy

The Director General of Fiorentina, Joe Barone, originally from Pozzallo, in the province of Ragusa, is hospitalized in critical condition at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He suffered a sudden illness around 3 pm while at a hotel in Cavenago di Brianza, just hours before Fiorentina’s match against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo. The match was postponed as a result of Barone’s condition.

Barone had a heart attack and was assisted by the Fiorentina medical staff before being taken to the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan in critical condition. The Fiorentina club immediately requested the postponement of the match, which was officially announced one hour before kick-off. The game was postponed, but many fans had already arrived at the stadium and were asked to leave.

The Fiorentina team had not yet reached Bergamo at the time of Barone’s illness. Staff, executives, and players were concerned about their Director General’s health. Memories of Davide Astori, the defender who died in a hotel in Udine in 2018 due to a cardiac issue, immediately came to mind. The team members, along with Barone’s family, have traveled to be by his side at the hospital.

The game will be rescheduled at a later date, considering the busy schedules of both teams involved in European competitions and Coppa Italia.
