Sellerio’s black and white photography showcased in outdoor exhibition: Palermo’s tribute to the great photographer on his centenary birthday.
Explain the following article briefly
The protagonist is Palermo: a vivid and living black and white, with which Enzo Sellerio in his photographic story expressed an unlimited love for his city, portrayed from the post-war years to the economic boom as it transformed, leaving behind pieces of history and memory.
In the year celebrating the centenary of his birth, among the many initiatives organized by the publishing house and the Sellerio Archive, a project has been born that traverses the city and returns each shot to the place where it was born. An open-air exhibition that crosses Palermo in 20 large photographs among the most iconic, installed in the places where they were actually taken, and that will be discovered during “narrative” walks, from the Cathedral towards the Palace of Justice, Porta Carini, Capo, Sant’Agostino, the Church of Santa Ninfa to continue on via Maqueda towards piazza Pretoria, via Roma and piazza Marina, the sea, Sant’Erasmo and again in the heart of the city to the Central Station. The first walk will be on October 13 at 11.30, departing from the Cathedral Square.
Three of these large photographs will be theatrically “animated” – on Sunday, October 20, at 4 pm; on Sunday, October 27, at 11 am and on Saturday, November 2, at 11 am – always in the places to which they belong: in order, they are L’Ingrasciata installed at the cove of Sant’Erasmo where the legendary trattoria of popular cuisine photographed by Sellerio in 1961 was, which will be animated by the actors of the Teatro Lab Palermo. The second tableau vivant will be at the stadium with the scene from the photograph entitled Uscita dallo stadio comunale, dated 1961; the actors will dress as the fans celebrating Palermo’s victory in the glorious season of promotion to Serie A. Finally, the 65 years of the photograph Bambini nel costume di cowboy ricevuto dai Morti, of November 2, 1959, one of the most representative shots by Enzo Sellerio who delivered to memory hordes of kids who in those years still played in the streets. Ditirammu Lab will animate it, with a performance in front of the photograph on via Porta Carini.
On Monday, a photo contest will also be launched: the challenge is to “redo” Sellerio’s images, photographing the places of Palermo from the same perspective, posing like the characters in his portraits, creating their own sets in imitation of the 20 original shots installed in the streets of Palermo. The photos, strictly in black and white, must be sent to the email [email protected] and [email protected]. The most beautiful shot or the one that will have most effectively evoked the original will be rewarded, the others will be published on the social media of Vie dei Tesori. The final step, on October 26: a treasure hunt in teams along five photos of the Sellerio itinerary, with multiple choice quizzes on the places and uses of the photographs.
