A day out at the beach turned into a misadventure for many swimmers in Scicli, in the province of Ragusa. The presence of jellyfish in the water was reported and even the local administration issued an alert, urging tourists and citizens to be cautious. The Common of Scicli warned that several reports were received from bathers at Playa Grande who experienced jellyfish stings. The stinging jellyfish species found in the Ragusa coast is the Pelagia Noctiluca, and the municipality advised bathers to avoid contact with them while respecting their presence. The jellyfish reported in Scicli is a common Mediterranean species with a translucent purple-pink umbrella. It has long filaments that can be very stinging, even longer than a meter.
