Schifani announcement: Palermo-Catania highway to be completely free by end of 2026

The reopening of the motorway section between Buonfornello and Scillato, along the Palermo-Catania, was the occasion for the president of the Region Renato Schifani, extraordinary commissioner for the coordination of interventions on the A19, to take stock of the work completed since the beginning of the commissioning: ten construction sites worth 27 million euros. Three others worth 105 million euros were started at the end of last year, to which three more worth 22 million euros have been added in these first months of 2024. By the end of the year, work for 100 million euros will start and another 13 construction sites worth around 85 million euros will be completed. At the suggestion of Commissioner Schifani, from mid-July to September, some motorway construction sites will be suspended to make traffic flow more smoothly during the summer period. The goal for the future is not to exceed 30 kilometers of closed areas simultaneously out of the total 190.

“Other works are being completed – emphasizes Schifani, speaking of the reopening of the viaducts Portelle, Comunello, Capraria, and Guggino and the Capraria tunnel – making the motorway safer and more fluid, especially during a period characterized by heavy traffic such as the April 25th and May 1st holidays. Since my appointment as extraordinary commissioner, thanks to the commitment of the two deputy commissioners, whom I thank for their work, there has been an acceleration both in the completion of some works and in the opening of others. A team spirit has been created and this has led to a sort of competition among companies to see who finishes first. By December 2026, we expect to completely or almost completely free this motorway, which has never been subject to ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions.”

“The works worth 7.3 million euros carried out by Anas – says the regional councilor for Infrastructure Alessandro Aricò, referring to the interventions on the viaducts, present with Schifani at the reopening ceremony of the closed section – had begun last July. They will allow traffic, previously flowing in both directions on the same carriageway, to resume its normal course with separate lanes in both directions.”
