San Vito Lo Capo prepares for Kite Festival: sky portraits of mafia victims included

The sky of San Vito Lo Capo is getting ready to be painted with the colors of kites for the fourteenth edition of the International Kite Festival, which will take place from May 22 to 26, featuring breathtaking acrobatic and static shows, charming night flights, workshops for children, and entertainment shows for the whole family. A five-day festival that promises to excite and entertain.

During the festival, along Via Savoia, San Vito Lo Capo will host the Wind Fair. Workshops to build and decorate kites will be organized at the flying field, catering to all ages and providing a unique opportunity to get closer to this magical world. One of this year’s attractions will be the exhibition of life-sized inflatable dinosaurs, presented for the first time in Sicily by the start-up Eventi Volanti. These prehistoric giants, carefully designed and crafted with impressive details, will take visitors on a journey back in time as they walk amidst their imposing profiles. The public will be able to get up close, take pictures, and be captivated by the grandeur and beauty of these creatures. The inflatable dinosaurs will be a spectacular visual addition to the festival, bringing a touch of adventure that perfectly complements the festive and creative atmosphere of the event.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi, the father of radio transmissions, a special kite equipped with an antenna for radio connections will be raised. This symbolic initiative pays tribute to Marconi’s fundamental contribution to the field of radio communications and underscores the connection between the tradition of kites and the technological innovation of radio transmissions. The kite with an antenna represents an interesting fusion of history and modernity, celebrating the past and future of wireless communications.

Another highly anticipated new feature is the Diploma International Kite Festival contest, promoted by the Radio Amateurs Association, Nunzio Nasi section of Trapani. Radio amateurs and radio listeners will have the opportunity to connect with different radio stations and share their enthusiasm for radio. The rules are available on the website www.aritrapani.it.

On May 23, during the special ceremony, the massacre of Capaci will be commemorated with kite performances dedicated to judges Giovanni Falcone and Francesca Morvillo and the police officers of the escort Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro, and Vito Schifani. The victims of the mafia will be represented by white kites. One kite will portray Barbara Rizzo and her twins Giuseppe and Salvatore Asta, victims of the Pizzolungo massacre in 1985.

Parallel to the Festival, from May 24 to 26, the Fly-Inn (air sports fly-in) will take place in Makari-Baia Santa Margherita, featuring a variety of activities including aeromodelling, drones, paragliding, and hang-gliding. Police and carabinieri helicopters will be on display.

The fourteenth edition of the International Kite Festival is organized by Emporio Musica in collaboration with Centro Media and with the support of San Vito Lo Capo Municipality. The direction of the wind artists is supervised by Ignazio Billera, the creator of the event in 2009.
