Sammartino denies all accusations in Catania inquiry

Explain the following article briefly:

“I have answered all the questions that I have been asked because I am not involved in any of the accusations against me. I have full confidence in the work of the judiciary.” This was said by Luca Sammartino, a regional deputy of the League, who has been suspended from public office for a year, after his questioning with the investigating judge in Catania, assisted by his lawyer, Carmelo Peluso. Sammartino, after being notified of the decision, resigned from his positions as Vice Governor and regional agriculture councillor.

“I am absolutely innocent of the events that have been alleged against me,” said Sammartino talking to journalists outside the Palace of Justice in Catania beside his lawyer. “I want to clarify that I am not involved in mafia crimes or vote-buying. I have been accused of two charges, to which I have responded with great serenity after reading the documents provided to me in these few days. I am calm and I have answered to everything that has been alleged against me, two cases of corruption. I am calm because I have not committed any crime. I have responded to demonstrate my total innocence.”

Regarding the accusation of bugging his office, one of the two charges filed by the Prosecutor, Sammartino explained that he responded “as was right to do in front of the public prosecutors and the investigating judge, clarifying in the smallest detail what was alleged against me.”
