Protest erupts over nuclear waste deposits in Calatafimi and Trapani

Sicily is among the areas chosen as a national nuclear waste repository, specifically the provinces of Trapani and the town of Calatafimi Segesta and Fulgatore. The Ministry of Environment and Energy has identified 51 possible locations for this repository. Local entities and military structures have 30 days to present their candidacy to host the repository, and the government has established a parallel process for self-candidatures in order to expedite the site selection. It is estimated that the construction of the repository will take four years, and it is unlikely that it will be completed before 2030. Sicily, with two identified areas, is less suitable for logistical reasons. The regions chosen are also in Basilicata, Puglia, Lazio, Piemonte, and Sardegna. Sicilian lawmakers and residents have strongly opposed this decision, as it would have significant environmental, economic, and social impacts on the region.
