Protest erupts over nuclear waste deposits in Calatafami and Trapani map

The Sicily region is also on the map of areas chosen as a nuclear waste repository, with the specific concern affecting the province of Trapani and the municipalities of Calatafimi Segesta and Fulgatore. The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has published a list of suitable areas for the national storage of nuclear waste, identifying 51 possible locations. Local authorities and military structures have 30 days to submit candidatures to host the repository. There are 51 suitable areas in Italy, where 78,000 cubic meters of low and medium-intensity radioactive waste will be stored, along with 17,000 cubic meters of high-intensity waste. Sicily has two identified areas, while the rest are located in Basilicata, Puglia, Lazio, Piemonte, and Sardegna. This process is expected to take at least a year, and construction of the repository will take four years. The Sicilian regional parliament and local politicians have expressed strong opposition to the nuclear waste repository in Sicily and plan to mobilize against it.
