Locked up at home and unable to leave, a young pregnant woman in Palma di Montechiaro, Agrigento, was allegedly monitored by her sisters-in-law while her husband was away. The 25-year-old husband was found guilty of abuse and kidnapping, and was sentenced to three years and six months in prison. He also has to pay 15,000 euros in damages to the victim. The abuse occurred between February and September 2021, during the woman’s pregnancy. She was repeatedly beaten and insulted, with her husband justifying the abuse by her alleged lack of efficiency in housework. The young woman was also threatened and intimidated into keeping her pregnancy a secret. After finding the courage to report the abuse, the 19-year-old revealed that she had been confined at home.
