Panamanian ship blocked in port of Palermo for safety violations

The Coast Guard of Palermo has ordered the technical detention of a Panamanian-flagged ship, on board of which 13 technical and operational deficiencies have been identified in relation to safety standards set by national and international regulations. Specialized military personnel have identified shortcomings in the ship’s certification, emergency systems, and life-saving devices, as well as in the crew’s preparation for handling emergencies. These deficiencies became evident during a fire drill conducted by the crew under the Coast Guard’s inspection. General living and working conditions on board were also found to be lacking, prompting the adoption of urgent measures to protect the embarked seafarers. The ship’s flag administration will need to send its own inspectors to supervise the necessary interventions to restore safety conditions and validate the ship’s safety certificates. The Coast Guard will then carry out a further inspection on board to verify that safety conditions have been restored in accordance with current international regulations. Only at that point will the detention order be lifted and the ship allowed to resume sailing.
