Palma di Montechiaro: Woman disfigured with acid, husband arrested, hospitalized

Another tragic episode of violence that, only by chance, did not result in another femicide on the day of Giulia Cecchettin’s funeral. In Palma di Montechiaro, a 50-year-old woman was attacked by her husband, who disfigured her with acid. The victim had already reported family violence and, for this reason, had been placed in a protected community with her minor daughter from a previous relationship, whose address was kept strictly secret to prevent the man from approaching them. Today, however, the woman was forced to return home to get some clothes. Her husband, a 48-year-old man with a criminal record, had evidently planned everything and attacked her with acid as she entered the house. A struggle ensued, during which the acid also spilled onto the man’s hands and neck, causing third-degree burns. The aggressor was taken to the hospital and then transferred to a burns center in Catania, where he is currently under arrest. The woman, on the other hand, was taken to a hospital in Agrigento, having suffered acid splashes to her face and back, disfiguring her. The mayor of Palma di Montechiaro expressed shock and anger at the incident, and condemned all forms of violence. In the weeks prior, the woman had been requesting to do community service work through the mayor’s office and social services.
