Palermo’s black beast: only two victories at Rigamonti Ceppi, the last 56 years ago

On Sunday, Lecco and Palermo will face each other for the sixteenth time in their history. Not a classic of our football, certainly, but a few matches were enough to establish the Lombards as a “bogey team” for the Rosanero. Yes, because Palermo has only won 4 times against the blue and sky blues, who on the other hand have beaten the Sicilians on 8 occasions. Three, instead, were the draws between the two clubs. The last meeting between the two teams dates back to October 29th, at the Barbera, where the visitors came out on top with a score of 1-2. Crociata opened the scoring for Palermo, before Sersanti’s goal brought the score to 0-2. Brunori’s goal, from a penalty, in the 96th minute was in vain.

A bogey team, as mentioned. Even more so if you analyze the previous meetings at the Rigamonti Ceppi. In Lombardy, Palermo has only won twice: in the 1958-1959 and 1967-1968 seasons. In both cases, for the Sicilians the victory in Lombardy coincided with promotion to Serie A. An extra incentive to give 100% in an important challenge to restart and secure participation in the playoffs (also because Brescia lost to Parma in the advance of the 29th round). A match with an ancient flavor, as the first match between the two teams dates back to the 1957-1958 season: the hosts won 2-1 with the goals of Gotti and Passarin, while for the Rosanero the only goal was scored by Lonardi. Most of the matches have been in Serie B, the only previous in Serie A is from the 1961-1962 season. Palermo finished eighth in that championship and it was one of the club’s best placements in the top flight.

With a taboo to break and a tradition to respect (victory away has always meant Serie A at the end of the season), Palermo flies to Lecco to restore their path.
