Palermo: Memorial stone for Circonvallazione massacre damaged during construction: Restoration underway
A few days ago, the memorial plaque commemorating the victims of the Circonvallazione massacre was damaged, but it was not an act of vandalism. The plaque ended up on the asphalt due to an “accident”: the top part accidentally came off during maintenance work carried out by the municipality workers along that stretch of the bypass, just after via Ugo La Malfa and a few meters away from the Sferracavallo junction. Today, on the 32nd anniversary of the Capaci massacre, the intervention to restore the plaque has been initiated.
Some drivers had noticed the damaged plaque at the edge of the road. It was only restored two years ago by students from the Monreale art institute. It bears the names of Sergeant Silvano Franzolin, Carabiniere Luigi Di Barca, Carabiniere Salvatore Raiti, and Giuseppe Di Lavore.
The Catania boss Alfio Ferlito also died in the massacre, targeted by a commando of gunmen armed with Kalashnikov rifles who were in action that day. Ferlito was in a Mercedes, escorted during the transfer from the prison of Enna to that of Trapani.
