The body of the victim was never found, but this was not enough to prevent the two diabolical lovers from receiving life sentences. The court in Palermo, led by Sergio Gulotta, sentenced Luana Cammalleri and Pietro Ferrara to life in prison for the murder of Cammalleri’s ex-husband, Carlo La Duca, and for making his body disappear. The murder mystery took place in Cerda, an agricultural center known for the Targa Florio, the oldest car race in the world, and for its artichoke cultivation.
Carlo La Duca, a local agricultural entrepreneur, disappeared on January 19, 2019 after leaving his home at 8:07 to meet his new partner in Cinisi. They were supposed to spend the weekend together, but they never met. The victim stopped at a plot of land owned by Ferrara in Ciaculli, a suburb of Palermo, on the way. According to the prosecution’s reconstruction, La Duca was killed here, among the citrus groves that were once controlled by mafia bosses. How the two defendants disposed of the body remains one of the mysteries of the case.
At 10:48, the businessman’s car left. According to the prosecutors, the man was already dead; Ferrara was driving. In a white Fiat Punto behind him was Luana Cammalleri, the ex-wife who allegedly participated in the murder.
The route of the businessman’s Volkswagen was tracked thanks to the GPS installed in the vehicle, which was found abandoned in a peripheral area of the city. The prosecution argued that the two lovers were the ones who killed the businessman, although his body was never found despite searches, and the motive for the murder was never clarified.
The victim’s relatives and his new partner were part of the civil case. The victim’s mother, Concetta Grispino, burst into tears after the verdict. “There are two children without a father. Murderers, they studied him, now they must suffer in prison.”
“I said from the very beginning that it was them,” the woman added, “they pretended to be friends and instead… My son will never be returned to me. Why, why? My son had no enemies, everyone respected him. It’s been five years since I last saw him, and I will never see him again.”
