Palermo boss Corona released as Mafia terms expire
The boss Giuseppe Corona, who was sentenced to 15 years in appeal, has been released due to the expiration of the maximum terms of pre-trial detention: this was decided by the third section of the Court of Appeal of Palermo, which noted the expiration (the arrest dates back to 2018) and ordered Corona’s release, who was in the strict prison regime of 41 bis, because he was considered the leader of the San Lorenzo district. In the first instance, he had been sentenced to 19 years, in the second to 15, but the sentence, pronounced last March 27, has not yet been deposited and there is no possibility of appealing to the Court of Cassation. This is the second case in a few days, after the release of the ten convicted individuals believed to be close to boss Matteo Messina Denaro: they too had benefited from the expiration of terms, due to a trial that lasted too long.
