Migrant landing in Pozzallo, two suspected smugglers arrested

Two Egyptians have been detained on suspicion of piloting a wooden boat from Libya with more than 50 migrants on board and being rescued in international waters by the NGO Mare Ionio. The Mare Ionio NGO’s ship docked in the port of Pozzallo on the evening of March 24th, after rescuing the migrants at sea, who were aboard a rickety wooden boat that had departed from the Libyan coast.

The Ragusa mobile team, after questioning, detained the two alleged smugglers who had piloted the boat from departure from the Libyan coast until the arrival of the rescuers. The two Egyptians, aged 30 and 18, are accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration and illegal entry into Italian territory.
