Maria, the first baby born in 51 years on Lampedusa

Maria, the baby born in Lampedusa on July 31, 2021 after the landing on the island of mother Rita, has been baptized. Her parents, both from Ivory Coast, had arrived on the island with a boat departing from Africa. The applause of the people of Lampedusa was thunderous as they participated in the evening mass at the church of San Gerlando. Rita, the mother, was moved to tears yesterday evening, upon hearing from Mayor Filippo Mannino that the patron saint of Lampedusa is the Madonna of Porto Salvo. Both Maria’s mother, who was granted honorary citizenship of Lampedusa yesterday, and her father are believers and practicing Catholics. For the couple and little Maria, Lampedusa has become their safe haven.
