Legal history of Sammartino regarding electoral offenses: two previous trials.

Two electoral crime processes in which Luca Sammartino, the suspended regional deputy of the League, is being charged in Catania. These investigations arose from the Pandora probe conducted by the Carabinieri on the Municipality of Tremestieri Etneo. The prosecutor had requested house arrest for him. Upon receiving the notification, carried out yesterday by the Carabinieri, Sammartino resigned as Vice President and Regional Agricultural Minister, roles temporarily assumed by Governor Renato Schifani.

One case is before the third penal section of the Catania Court, focusing on electoral corruption based on investigations by the Digos police on alleged vote buying for the 2017 Regional and 2018 National elections. According to the accusation, Sammartino, then a member of Italia Viva, promised jobs and transfers in exchange for votes for him and other close political figures.

In another case before the fourth monocratic section of the Catania Court, the former Regional Deputy of Italia Viva was sued by the Prosecution for electoral crime. The accusation claims that, as a candidate in the 2017 regional elections, he offered benefits to Calogero Lucio Brancato, a suspected member of the Laudani clan named in the suit, in exchange for his and his family’s votes. Sammartino is represented by lawyer Carmelo Peluso in both cases.

Sammartino had previously been investigated in a case involving alleged irregularities in votes cast by elderly individuals in a nursing home in the province of Catania, but his position was later archived.
