Lampedusa, the hotspot is bursting: there are 3,279 migrants, eight times the expected capacity

The Lampedusa hotspot, designed to accommodate 400 people, is currently hosting 3,279 migrants, including 252 who arrived during the night. Despite the transfer of 697 individuals to Porto Empedocle and Pozzallo yesterday, the facility remains overcrowded. To alleviate the situation, the Prefecture of Agrigento, in agreement with the Ministry of the Interior, has arranged for the transfer of 250 people on the ship Galaxy to Porto Empedocle, with another 100 individuals divided between Trapani and Catania. Recent arrivals mainly come from Eritrea, Chad, Ghana, Sudan, and Egypt, arriving on small boats from Tunisia and Libya.
