Lampedusa airport (IATA code: LMP) is the reference point for those wishing to visit the remote Pelagie Islands.

It is a small airport located very close to the main center of the island, so much so that, excluding luggage, it could even be reached on foot (in about 15 minutes; once in the center, you can reach other places on the island by bus). From Lampedusa, you can take a ferry to reach the smaller island of Linosa.

Only six airlines, both domestic and low-cost, operate flights at this airport and most flights are only available during the tourist season.

Lampedusa Airport

Lampedusa is the southernmost island in Italy and is part of the Pelagie Islands (Lampedusa, Linosa, Isola dei Conigli, Lampione, Scoglio del Sacramento). Administratively, the Pelagie Islands belong to the province of Agrigento and are located in the heart of the Mediterranean, between the coasts of Tunisia and Sicily.

Lampedusa is the largest of the archipelago and is about 38 km, corresponding to about 21 nautical miles, from the island of Linosa. From Delimara Point, on the island of Malta, the distance is 220 km, while from Sicily (Porto Empedocle) it is 205 km. Libya (Tripoli) is 335 km away and the coasts of Tunisia are 167 km from Lampedusa.

The airport of Lampedusa is located in the south-east of the island, precisely in Cala Francese, and is located 1.9 km from the port and 1 km from the city center. The airport was built in 1968, but in 2012 was the subject of modernization works to renovate the old structure.

Lampedusa Airport is managed by AST Aeroservizi Spa (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti) and is located on a surface of 90 hectares. It has a single passenger terminal for arrivals and departures, structured on two levels, and has the shape of a large ship. Inside the terminal, there are 8 check-in desks and 4 passenger control gates. The airport runway is 1,800 meters long and is used for annual air traffic of about 200,000 passengers.

Services at the airport include duty-free shops, a bar, a ticket office and a lost and found office. There is also free wi-fi for passengers.

These are: Alitalia, with departures from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate; Blu Express, with departures from Milan Malpensa, Bergamo, Rimini, Bologna, Rome Fiumicino and Verona; Neos, with departures from Milan Malpensa; Volotea, with departures from Bergamo, Verona, Venice, Genoa and Turin; Vueling, with departures from Rome Fiumicino; and Danish Air Transport, with departures from Palermo and Catania.

How to reach the centre of Lampedusa from the Airport

Transport on the island:

The island of Lampedusa is served by two bus lines, both with terminus in Piazza Brignone, located 1.3 km from the airport. The lines are the red circle, which connects Piazza Brignone to Cala Creta, and the blue circle, which connects Piazza Brignone to Isola dei Conigli. Since the island is very small, these two bus lines cover all major tourist destinations. The city centre, Piazza Garibaldi, is 1.1 km from the airport.

Taxi:

To reach the city center from the airport, which is only one kilometer, you can take a taxi for 5-6 euros.

Car rental:

It is advisable to rent a car in Lampedusa to visit the island with tranquility and reach all its beaches in total autonomy. The island can be completely turned in an hour by car. Within the airport, there are several international car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Goldcar, and others.
