Hot and humidity don’t let up, here comes a second heatwave with temperatures up to 48 degrees.

The Italian climate is becoming increasingly tropical, and at the beginning of the week, a new high-pressure system is coming that will bring extreme heat to the peninsula. This is the forecast by Mattia Gussoni, meteorologist for the website www.iLMeteo.it. “Caronte Bis is coming, a new African heatwave with the high-pressure system that will bring temperatures above 45°C (113°F) even in Puglia and peaks of 48°C (118.4°F) again in Sardinia. And all this heat will also warm our seas.” The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change predicts that by the end of July, the water temperature will reach 32°C (89.6°F), even warmer than that of the Caribbean Sea. This is, the expert explains, the “serious problem of Mhw, or Marine Heatwaves, which are increasingly frequent with the boiling sea water. We have been noticing this while swimming in Italy for years now, but this 2023 seems even worse than 2022.”

On land, in addition to the heat, he adds, “we are also experiencing the disaster of extreme events caused by global warming: like never before this month, we have realized that after a phase of an African high-pressure system at 40-48°C (104-118.4°F), heavy rainfalls, destructive hailstorms, and floods always arrive promptly. Extreme weather phenomena, in fact, are closely related to heat and humidity: the hotter the air mass is and the higher the humidity, which forms raindrops, hailstones, and thunderstorms. Moreover, the hotter the air, the lighter it becomes: this way, the vapor rises up to 10 km (6.2 miles) in the air inside cumulonimbus clouds, freezes, and causes large hail, even up to 10 cm (3.9 inches) as happened in recent days in the Po Valley.”

In short, African heat, record hailstorms, and stormy winds: this is the new climate with global warming, which is making Italy increasingly tropical. And the emergency is not over: Caronte Bis is coming, and the beginning of the new week will be even hotter. As for the next few hours, a stormy Saturday is expected in the Northeast, a slight drop in temperatures in the Center, and still plenty of sun and heat in the South. Sunday will be more stable and sunny, with temperatures rising again in the North. The new week will then experience a repeat of Caronte, and for now, the extreme heat will persist.

Forecast:
Saturday 22: In the North: more thunderstorms, especially in the East. In the Center: good weather with some passing clouds. In the South: sunny with intense heat.
Sunday 23: In the North: sunny and hot. In the Center: sunny and very hot. In the South: sunny with intense heat, further intensifying.
Monday 24: In the North: sunny and very hot. In the Center: sunny and hot up to 40°C (104°F). In the South: sunny with extreme heat up to 45-48°C (113-118.4°F).
Trend: African heatwave, especially towards the Major Islands and the extreme South, widespread highs of 45°C (113°F) at the beginning of the week with peaks of 48°C (118.4°F).
