Gas pipeline damaged in Palermo on Tiro a Segno street: Amg Energia workers repairing it.
The emergency gas operators of Amg Energia have been working since Thursday evening (October 17) to repair a damaged gas pipeline on Via Tiro a Segno near the Missione Speranza e Carità by Biagio Conte. The pipeline, with a resulting gas leak, was damaged on Thursday evening due to the collapse of an excavation opened by a company carrying out works in the area on behalf of Terna. The area was secured on Thursday evening, blocking the gas leak from the damaged pipe, and work is still ongoing. The issue was reported on Thursday evening around 8 PM to the Amg Energia gas emergency hotline (800136136). The team on duty found a large open excavation near the gas distribution network’s cast iron pipe, with partially collapsed containment walls. The collapse damaged both a utility connection serving the Missione Speranza e Carità and the gas pipeline, which was left exposed. The issue was likely caused by the failure to close the road to traffic constantly used by heavy vehicles: the narrow roadway, vibrations, and stresses of passing vehicles caused the excavation to collapse despite containment efforts.
Amg Energia personnel, in collaboration with the company that conducted the excavation, managed to stop the gas leak. Today, with the same company’s help, operational teams are working on cutting and decommissioning the damaged pipeline section, which will then be relocated. The company clarifies that no issues or gas leaks occurred near the hotel institute Piazza on Corso dei Mille where Amg Energia operators conducted a check this morning. The alarm that led to the school’s evacuation on Thursday evening was due to the smell of gas, noticeable throughout the area, caused by the damaged pipe on Via Tiro a Segno.
