Funeral of Patrizia Russo, Priest: “In heaven the Lord will tell her not to cry”

Patrizia Russo, a 53-year-old teacher from Agrigento, was remembered with great emotion during her funeral, held today at the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in Agrigento. Patrizia, a victim of femicide, was killed by her husband Giovanni Salamone on October 18 in Solero, Alessandria. The homily, given by Don Giuseppe Cumbo, the vicar of the bishop, was an invitation to transform the pain into love, imagining Patrizia welcomed in Paradise with the words: “Do not cry.” It is always difficult, in situations like this, to find appropriate words that are not cliché or formal, or words that instead of comforting may annoy – added Don Giuseppe. In the face of the mystery of the death of an innocent, one remains silent, reflects, cries. At the funeral, the deputy mayor of Agrigento Aurelio Trupia, the mayor of Solero Andrea Toniato, and the parish priest of Solero, Don Mario Bianchi, one of the first to arrive at the scene of the crime, participated. On the day of national mourning, the city of Agrigento came together in grief for the loss of Patrizia, with flags at half-mast and a minute of silence observed at noon.

The children, Francesco and Giuliana, spoke during the ceremony, expressing their deep sorrow for the loss of their mother, a victim of a senseless act. “We will face this difficult reality without you, but we will do it as you taught us: with the strength of love,” they said in a touching tribute. Even at the Esseneto stadium, during the Akragas-Ragusa match, the players paid tribute to Patrizia with a symbolic gesture.
