Funds for children of workers killed on the job in Palermo: “A battle not just for us”

Six months after the tragic death of Giovanni Gnoffo on a construction site on Via Ugo La Malfa, the construction fund of the Cgil union announces that it will guarantee “the right to education for the children of those workers who died in fatal work accidents until they complete their studies.” Piero Ceraulo, the general secretary of Fillea Cgil, made this announcement during a sit-in organized this morning (April 19) on Via Ugo La Malfa. Among the flags and union members, Gnoffo’s wife can also be seen. In her eyes, anger for her husband’s death and disappointment and the feeling of abandonment experienced after the spotlight that had illuminated the case has faded can clearly be seen.

“I never imagined that no one has ever looked for me all this time,” she attacks. “We have not received any psychological, moral, or economic support. I have supported myself with the help of my family. This fight is not only mine but also and above all for the other families,” she insists. “Because who does not have the support of family or the courage or the strength to go on every day as I do?”

The woman then let herself go to recount that tragic day. “He got up to go to work as usual,” she recounts, “saying we’ll see each other later. In the afternoon, however, I received a call explaining that there had been an accident. I never imagined I would never see him again. You never fully realize what has happened, also because you do not know how things actually went. Even today you expect your husband to come back home at any moment. You think everything will be fine, everything will go back to normal. And no one cares about how these workers’ families are doing.”

“What emerges today,” explains Celauro, “is that despite the daily complaints we make about the lack of safety conditions on construction sites, there is a further damage, of families left in the shadows without even economic recognition.”
