Flights to Sicily

Arriving in Sicily by plane is a convenient and fast way to reach the island. The main airports are located in Palermo and Catania, while the secondary airports of Trapani and Comiso are primarily used by low-cost airlines.

The geographical distribution of Sicilian airports is well balanced, with Catania Airport on the east coast, Comiso in the south, and Palermo and Trapani in the west. This makes it easy to reach any part of the island, even if you arrive at a different point from where you intend to stay.

Once you arrive at your destination, you can get around by renting a car or using local public transportation, especially intercity buses, which are comfortable and frequent.

Here are some tips for arriving in Sicily by plane:

  • Book your flight in advance, especially if you are traveling during the high season.
  • Consider purchasing a flight + hotel package, which may be more cost-effective than buying the two services separately.
  • Bring a valid identification document and a passport if necessary.
  • Check the weight and dimensions of your luggage before departure to avoid paying extra fees at check-in.
  • Enjoy the flight and the breathtaking panorama of the island!

Why arrive in Sicily by plane

The main advantage of traveling by plane compared to other means of transportation is evident: regardless of the Italian airport you depart from, the actual flight duration is never more than an hour and a half. This fact, combined with the high frequency and availability of flights, allows you to make the most of your first and last vacation days, perhaps by choosing a morning flight to Sicily for arrival and an evening flight for the return.

On the other hand, traveling by car can become extremely lengthy, depending on the starting location, of course. Considering that you need to first reach Reggio Calabria and then cross the Strait of Messina by ferry, you can end up losing two days in transit.

Even by choosing one of the ferries departing from mainland Italy, the journey is not the most relaxing. It takes over 12 hours from Civitavecchia to Palermo, slightly less from Naples.
