Fire in Giarre: A blaze destroys a tobacconist shop

An arson, sparked for reasons still under investigation, in the early hours of yesterday, completely destroyed a tobacco shop and lottery office in Via Principe di Piemonte in Macchia di Giarre, the most populous neighborhood in the city. The fire reduced to ashes the machinery of the central counter, all the computers supplied, and completely blackened the entire premises.

According to the testimony of the owner himself, it was the neighbors who noticed the thick black smoke mixed with an irritating acrid smell coming out of the shutters. The owner then rushed into the premises beginning to try to extinguish the flames.

The carabinieri arrived immediately on the scene alerted to 112 and after a couple of hours the firefighters from the detachment of Riposto, who extinguished the fire and began investigations on the condition of the building, later declared uninhabitable. The material damages have not yet been calculated, but they are significant as everything has been destroyed by the fire.

According to a preliminary reconstruction of the origins of the fire and the statement of the owner himself, the flames are believed to have originated from a short circuit in one of the junction boxes of the electrical circuit.

There seems to be no peace for this historic commercial business, in the past a victim of robberies and criminal attacks.
