The Court of Appeal of Catania has handed down 16 guilty verdicts and 2 acquittals in relation to the trial stemming from Operation Hurricane, which exposed extortion, arson, and robberies committed in Lentini, in the Siracusa area. The investigations began in January 2016, when the Catania District Anti-Mafia Directorate alleged that the defendants had posed as gas technicians to rob elderly homeowners. Others were accused of using the blackmail method of “cavallo di ritorno.” Some of the accused had allegedly intimidated their victims, including entrepreneurs, by setting fire to their properties.
