EU funds fraud: financial police raid in Trapani, led by former senator Nino Papania
Over sixty financiers from the Provincial Command of Trapani were in action to carry out 14 precautionary measures issued by the courts of Marsala and Trapani, at the request of the European Prosecutor’s Office – based in Palermo – and the Prosecutor’s Office of Marsala, against well-known political figures from Trapani who have held or currently hold important positions at municipal, regional and, in one case, national level. At the same time, multiple home and business searches are ongoing in the provinces of Trapani and Palermo to search and acquire further evidence and investigative leads.
The operations are part of a complex and articulated investigation carried out by the Economic-Financial Police Unit of the Trapani finance guard under the direction of the European Prosecutor’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office of Marsala, which has revealed multiple crimes of aggravated fraud for obtaining public funds, corruption, embezzlement, and money laundering and self-money laundering behaviors. The main promoter and organizer of the perpetrated offenses is a former Senator of the Republic as well as a former Member of the Sicilian Regional Assembly and Regional Assessor of the Sicilian Region.
