Erice’s historical Garden del Balio restored to its former glory

The restoration and enhancement works of the Historical Garden of Balio have begun in Erice, fully funded by the Pnrr (National Plan for Recovery and Resilience) for a total amount of over one and a half million euros (1,663,470). The works are expected to be completed by April 2024. The garden was created in 1872 by Count Agostino Sieri Pepoli, who reconstructed three towers and created the Torretta Pepoli. The restoration project includes naturalistic enhancements, especially in the ancient forest. The project is also funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The mayor and deputy mayor explained that the restoration will include tree care, restoration of historical plant architecture, architectural and monumental restoration, and the enhancement of irrigation and lighting systems. They also emphasized the importance of enhancing the ancient forest to mitigate the effects of climate change.
