Egyptian adult sentenced to 12 years and 8 months for rape at Villa Bellini, Catania

The judge in Catania, Giuseppina Montuori, sentenced one of the Egyptian adults accused of group sexual violence against a thirteen-year-old girl to 12 years and 8 months in prison on January 30th in the public bathrooms of Villa Bellini in front of her seventeen-year-old boyfriend. The judge also ordered the defendant to pay 50,000 euros as a provisional payment to the minor’s parents, who are civil parties, and 20,000 euros to the other civil parties including the victim’s boyfriend, as well as the court costs.

The defendant has been permanently banned from public offices and has lost parental responsibility for the duration of the sentence. The judge also ordered that after serving the sentence, the defendant will not be allowed to approach places frequented by minors for two years.

Four other adults are on trial, through the ordinary process, in front of the second section of the Criminal Court of Catania. All proceedings are being held behind closed doors. Meanwhile, two Egyptian minors are being judged in front of the juvenile judges of Catania: one has access to the accelerated process and the other is being judged through the ordinary process.

Key to the investigations were the statements of the thirteen-year-old girl and her boyfriend who reported the violence and then identified the attackers. Their testimonies were obtained during a probative incident in front of the two investigating judges, which was documented in the proceedings of the two cases.
