Drug importation from Spain and Malta: anti-drug raid in Catania
Explain to me briefly the following article
New anti-drug raids in Catania. The financial police officers of the Provincial Command carried out 5 precautionary measures – three in prison, one under house arrest and one with the obligation to stay and report to the judicial police – for the production, trafficking and illegal possession of narcotics, aggravated for three of them, by the transnationality of the criminal conduct.
Assets worth 485,000 euros were also seized. The blitz by the Economic-Financial Police Unit of Catania follows the execution of the personal and real precautionary measures of September 26, within the framework of operation “El Loco”, against 9 members of two different criminal associations.
In this context, investigations have allowed to reconstruct the structure of the two criminal groups and the operational methods used for the importation from Spain to the national territory and the island of Malta of narcotics as well as for the subsequent retail sale in the local drug markets. Specifically, the first group was active in the hinterland of Etna and in the province of Syracuse, but with transnational ramifications, directly dealing with the supply, even through importation from the Iberian Peninsula, of cocaine, hashish and marijuana, transporting them both to Italy and to Malta.
The second criminal group is said to have exploited the ability of the other criminal faction to move significant quantities of narcotics to manage the retail sale of drugs in the local drug markets of the province of Etna and Syracuse. The involvement of additional suspects has emerged, current recipients of precautionary measures.
Among them, a 25-year-old, son of a prominent member of the Cappello-Bonaccorsi clan, who, together with another convicted member of the clan, allegedly participated as an investor in the shipment from Spain of an 80-kilo cargo of narcotics, ordering part of it for subsequent independent resale; two 37 and 38-year-olds who, in concert with associates already in prison on September 26, allegedly transported half a kilo of cocaine from Catania to Syracuse and then sold it to a buyer, only to later replace it with the same quantity following complaints received about the quality; two other individuals, aged 46 and 34, who allegedly transported approximately 6 kg of marijuana and 5 kg of hashish from Spain.
Precautionary custody in prison was ordered for three, house arrest and an obligation to stay accompanied by the obligation to report to the judicial police for the other two. Overall, the operation involved 21 suspects, 14 of whom were subject to personal precautionary measures (12 in prison, 1 under house arrest and 1 with an obligation to stay and report to the judicial police).
