Cuffaro collects rejection from Forza Italia and relaunches DC for elections

Explain the following article briefly:

Totò Cuffaro, national secretary of the DC, does not give up. “Many – he asserts – continue to think that the Christian Democracy will not participate in the next European elections. They are wrong, we are Christian Democrats and continue to work to find a solution even when others are convinced there is no longer any possibility. We will participate in the European elections.”

Meanwhile, the hypothesis of Cuffaro’s external support for the Forza Italia list for the European elections has been dismissed, as well as the candidacy of Luisa Lantieri (), a regional deputy for Forza Italia, on the blue list of the Sicily-Sardinia constituency. Sardinia, in addition to a man, should also nominate a woman, and to complete the list of the two islands, the fourth Sicilian will no longer be needed. After seeing the possibility of depositing the DC symbol on one of the lists fade away, in order to win and not be left out of the game, the former president of the region had returned to flirt with the blues to converge the votes of his party on the name of the vice president of the Ars, as well as a member of the special secretariat when she was in Palazzo d’Orleans. The two parties were not supposed to sign any written agreement. It would have only been the external support of the DC to Forza Italia.

The president of the region, Renato Schifani, had expressed support for Luisa Lantieri, despite a certain unease tinged with pink within his party. In the evening, however, there was a twist and the plan fell through. Another woman, the former PD member and outgoing MEP Caterina Chinnici, who had recently moved to the Berlusconi camp and was supported in her new race to Brussels by MPA leader Raffaele Lombardo, had apparently thrown a wrench in the works. The reconnection of ties between Forza Italia and the DC is demonstrated by Schifani’s statements, who had rejected the accusation of opposing Lantieri’s candidacy and described the veto as “a hoax”: “It would be absurd to veto a deputy that I respect and that we all respect, who we elected vice president of the regional Parliament. Elected in Forza Italia with Forza Italia’s votes. It would really be absurd,” he emphasized on the sidelines of the ceremony for the reopening of a section of the road towards Catania of the A19. And regarding malcontents, he added: “I don’t understand what grievances there could be within my party towards Luisa Lantieri, I don’t think they can arise from an internal competition.”

For Schifani, the issue was of national level: “We have closed the list with three men and three women, in Sicily six candidates and two in Sardinia. If Sardinia does not nominate a woman for territorial reasons, it would be up to Sicily to nominate a fourth woman. And I believe that the solution of nominating Lantieri, the third current regional deputy, should be the natural solution.”
