Who was Pio La Torre?
Pio La Torre (1927-1982) was an Italian politician, trade unionist and activist, known for his commitment to the fight against the mafia and for workers’ rights. Born in Palermo, La Torre was one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party in Sicily and held important political positions, including that of regional and national deputy. He is best remembered for promoting the Rognoni-La Torre law, the first Italian law that introduced the crime of mafia association and the seizure of assets to mafiosi. His life was tragically interrupted in 1982, when he was murdered by the mafia in an ambush in Palermo. The naming of Comiso airport after Pio La Torre is a tribute to his legacy of courage and civic engagement.
