Civil protection, alert level on Mount Etna raised to “pre-alert” level
The alert level for Mount Etna has been raised, and the regional civil protection warns the municipalities. The Institute of Volcanology has detected strong fluctuations in volcanic tremors. The civil protection has upgraded the operational phase regarding Etna to “Pre-alert” with a high possibility of imminent occurrence. Access to the summit areas is subject to the provisions contained in the volcanic risk alert procedures. The bulletin for civil aviation has changed from green to yellow but does not currently affect the operation of Catania’s international airport. The airport’s official website shows an error message. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reports that there have been significant fluctuations in volcanic tremors, with some instances reaching high values. The tremor sources have primarily been in the southern-eastern crater and an area east of the central craters. The depth of the tremors varies between 1,700 and 2,900 meters above sea level. Minor activity and intermittent tremors have also been recorded at the Bocca Nuova crater. Deformation signals have not shown significant changes.
