Cisl Sicilia protest in Palermo against privatization of Poste.

Over 500 postal workers in Sicily have expressed their strong opposition to the possible privatization of Poste Italiane proposed by the Meloni Government. Today, in a protest in Palermo, they reaffirmed their deep attachment to the company and their clients, ensuring all postal services in the area with open offices and regular mail and parcel deliveries. In the coming days, they will organize further awareness-raising initiatives to inform citizens about the concrete risks of privatizing Poste Italiane. This was stated by the regional secretary of Slp Cisl Sicilia, Maurizio Affatigato.

“Despite the great sense of responsibility that has led us not to create inconvenience to citizens and businesses,” he continues, “we cannot remain indifferent to this new threat to our company and the essential public service it represents. The sale of 30% of the share capital held by the Treasury, as hypothesized by the government, would be a decisive step towards the complete privatization of Poste Italiane. “An operation that – according to Affatigato – would have dramatic consequences for the country and would result in cuts to personnel and the network of post offices, with an inevitable worsening of services offered to citizens, especially in rural and peripheral areas. In addition, the costs of postal services would experience a significant increase, making them less accessible to the most vulnerable segments of the population. Privatization would also lead to a drastic reduction in staff, putting thousands of jobs at risk.”

“We are deeply concerned,” added Confederation Secretary Cisl Sicilia Sebastiano Cappuccio, “about the future of Poste Italiane and the public service it provides. We ask the government to reconsider its position and safeguard a company that is fundamental to the country.” In addition to today’s protest, Sicilian postal workers announce that in the coming days they will hold further awareness-raising initiatives to inform citizens about the concrete risks of privatizing Poste Italiane.
