Causes of the tragedy in Casteldaccia: gas poisoning or structural collapse

The investigations into the work massacre in Casteldaccia are still in the very early stages, with investigators trying to reconstruct what may have happened to the workers who were working on the sewer system. There are two hypotheses about the causes that may have caused the accident that cost the lives of five of them: gas inhalation or structural collapse. This is stated by the secretary of the Sicilian Cgil, Alfio Mannino, who has just arrived in Casteldaccia.

Also present on the scene is the prosecutor of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio. Examinations on the worker who is currently hospitalized could provide important elements on the causes of the accident that proved fatal for his colleagues.

“It is still not clear why the workers were inside the tank,” explains Antonio Bertucci of the fire brigade. It is a lifting plant for sewage water from Amap, which deals with the sewer system. When it comes to sewage water, various elements can cause intoxication, from methane to hydrogen sulfide.
