Catania sees 4% increase in foreign residents by 2024

The foreign population residing in Catania has grown by about five hundred people – with a positive trend of 4% – between 2022 and 2023, reaching 14,359 units, which represent just under 5% of the total resident population. This was announced by Istat data that were commented on this morning, Saturday, April 20, during the presentation of the Caritas Migrantes 2023 report “Free to choose whether to migrate or stay” in the presence of Mons. Salvatore Genchi, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Catania, and Don Nuccio Puglisi, director of Caritas Catania, and Don Carlo Palazzolo, director of Migrantes Catania, who introduced the works, with moderation by journalist Antonio Leo, before the report by Simone Varisco, curator of the Caritas-Migrantes Report.

The foreign population in Catania is growing, although its incidence in the city compared to the total residents (4.8%) is still lower than the national average (8.6%). Catania confirms its position as the first Sicilian province for the number of foreign residents, with 36,357, followed by Palermo (35,336) and Ragusa (33,638).

The foreign population in Catania represents 18% of the total residents in Sicily, with the majority coming from Sri Lanka, Romania, and Bangladesh. The report also highlights the increase in foreign companies registered in Sicily, with around 30,000 currently registered, showing a growing trend, although still limited compared to other regions such as Liguria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Lombardy.

The Caritas Migrantes Report serves as an important tool for understanding and integrating migrants into society, recognizing their rights and the need for a multicultural and multi-religious approach. The report also discusses the trend of decreasing foreign births in Italy, indicating a consistent decline over the past decade.
