Catania facing drought: work to channel Simeto river waters starts on April 29

The article explains that starting next Monday (April 29) for three days, the Catania Reclamation Consortium will carry out work to temporarily channel the waters of the Simeto River downstream of Ponte Barca, where there are leaks from the sluice gates. This decision was made by the emergency water crisis task force led by the president of the Sicilian Region, while waiting for the already funded permanent repairs by the regional Civil Protection, which will require approximately two months to complete.

The temporary deviation does not require any environmental impact and will allow approximately 600 liters of water per second to be channeled into certain areas of the Catania Plain through the Consortium’s irrigation canals. This water supply will also be available in the summer months. This operation will partially help farmers in the area cope with the serious irrigation problems faced by the territory, where reservoirs are almost empty and under stable conditions the water supply is about 3000 liters per second.

The plan for the work has already obtained authorization from the Civil Engineering Department and the River Authority, who recently carried out inspections and it involves moving earth downstream in the riverbed to channel the water into an aqueduct that will deliver water to the irrigation area.
