Catalfamo and Paratore, former deputy and medical director, convicted in Messina healthcare system trial
The article reports on the conviction of former regional deputy Antonio Catalfamo, involved in issues related to the Papardo Hospital in Messina, at the first instance trial held under the fast-track procedure on the so-called Health System. The judge Ornella Pastore sentenced the former politician to 5 years and 4 months, while the medical manager Francesca Paratore will have to serve 5 years and 8 months. Interceptions by the financial police reportedly revealed attempts to influence appointments and positions at the hospital. Catalfamo allegedly tried to secure a position for himself while proposing political agreements to others in exchange for roles at the public institution. Two other defendants, Daniele Caruso and Giuseppe Arena, have instead agreed to a 10-month plea deal (suspended sentence). In conspiracy with Paratore, they allegedly falsely certified that Arena had undergone a swab test for coronavirus and had received the result, when in fact the test had never been performed according to the accusation.
