Casteldaccia honors fallen officer Orazio Costantino on 55th anniversary of his death

On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of his death, a commemoration ceremony was held to remember the carabiniere scelto, Orazio Costantino, Gold Medal for Military Valor posthumously. He was killed on April 27, 1969 in Casteldaccia while facing two extortionists while on duty.

To honor the sacrifice of the heroic military officer, a wreath of flowers was laid at the foot of the monument erected in honor of the fallen in via Carlo Cattaneo – largo Costantino Orazio in Casteldaccia, and a laurel wreath in contrada Fiorilli, the location of the decorated’s death.

The ceremony was attended by the family members of the military officer, Brigadier General Luciano Magrini, commander of the Carabinieri in Palermo, the mayor of Casteldaccia, Giovanni Di Giacinto, the commanders of the Carabinieri group in Monreale and the company in Bagheria, Lieutenant Colonel Giulio Modesti and Major Francesco Battaglia, as well as Lieutenant Alessia Penge, commander of the operational and radio mobile unit of Bagheria, along with the regional inspector of the national carabinieri association in Sicily, Ignazio Buzzi, accompanied by a representation of retired military personnel.

During the ceremony, the life of the slain carabiniere and the motivation for the high honor bestowed upon him were read, followed by a touching moment of prayer led by Monsignor Vincenzo Manzella, retired bishop of Cefalù.

The memory of the military officer united all those present, as highlighted by General Magrini himself, who, in his words, emphasized the importance of Costantino’s sacrifice, who, faced with the risk of his own life, without hesitation, still demonstrated that intrinsic bond to the highest ethical and moral values.
