Avola imposes €120,000 fines for modified electric bikes
The Carabinieri of the Noto Company carried out a check on altered electric bicycles in Avola, in the province of Syracuse. A total of 18 bicycles were found to be altered, as they had been enhanced to reach speeds above the limits allowed by law, resulting in fines totaling 120,000 euros. The drivers were fined for driving without a license, not wearing a protective helmet, lack of registration and the absence of a license plate and compulsory insurance, with fines reaching up to 8,000 euros for each vehicle, as well as seizure for the confiscation of the vehicle. The operation was carried out with the support of specialized personnel for monitoring traffic circulation from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in southern Bari and the vehicle testing center in Catania. The modifications made to the electric bicycles, both in terms of structural characteristics and inadequate braking system, increase the likelihood of road accidents with the potential involvement of pedestrians.
